Artemis Pyle, born Thomas Delmer Pyle Jr. on July 15, 1948, is best known as the former drummer for the iconic Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. Raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Pyle’s musical journey began in his early years, influenced by his father’s love for country music. He honed his skills playing in local bands before joining Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1974, replacing original drummer Bob Burns.

Pyle’s energetic drumming style became a defining element of the band’s sound, though not the original drummer on hits, “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird,” he did play them live with the band many times.

Pyle joined on the Skynyrd album, “Nuthin’ Fancy” released on March 24, 1975. It featured, “Saturday Night Special,” “On the Hunt,” and “Whiskey Rock-a-Roller.” The album, “Gimme Back My Bullets” followed featuring it popular title track. In the latter part of 1979 Pyle performed on their live album, “One More from the Road” and then came the last album before that famous tragedy. “Street Survivors” was released on October 17, 1977 – three days before doom hit the band. The record featured it’s lead-off single, “What’s Your Name” as well as “That Smell” and “I Know a Little.” Despite the tragic plane crash in 1977 that claimed the lives of several band members, including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, Pyle survived and continued his musical career.

In the years following the crash, Pyle pursued various musical projects, including forming the band Artemis Pyle Band. He also contributed to Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute albums and occasionally reunited with surviving members of the band for performances.
