April 5, 2024 – Sylvia Tyson, born Sylvia Fricker, is a Canadian singer-songwriter known for her influential contributions to folk and country music. Born in 1940 in Chatham, Ontario, she rose to prominence as one half of the iconic folk duo, Ian & Sylvia, alongside Ian Tyson, in the 1960s. Their harmonious blend and poignant songwriting captivated audiences worldwide. They moved to New York in the early 60s and were signed with manager Albert Grossman who also worked with Peter, Paul and Mary and later Bob Dylan.

The duo found their first success on Vanguard Records and their cover of Gordon Lightfoot’s “Early Morning Rain” which went to #1 in Canada in 1965. Later in 1972 they had another big hit with the #4 charting song “You Were On My Mind” written by Sylvia and also made famous by the band “We Five.” We’d be remise if we didn’t mention the pairs signature song, “Four Strong Winds” which is still celebrated to this day. After the duo disbanded, Sylvia pursued a successful solo career, releasing several acclaimed albums. Throughout her career, she’s been celebrated for her soulful voice, poetic lyrics, and enduring impact on the Canadian music scene. Tyson’s legacy continues to inspire generations of musicians.
