Interview #4 – Randy Bachman: Why He Needed To Change BTO With “Freeways”
May 28, 2019 – By the time Bachman Turner Overdrive released the album “Freeways,” their sixth studio album in February 1977 the band had nothing but hits. Ten Top 40 hits since 1973 in Canada and six in the U.S. Everything changed with “Freeways.” It was a different album that alienated many fans. The sound was lighter – less rock. The other singer in the band Fred Turner once said he felt like a sideman and that “Freeways” should have been a solo album and he only sang two tunes on it. In fact, Bachman, for the first time, wrote every song on the project

I actually really liked “Freeways” in spite of many of my friends who hate the album. I had just turned 17 when it came out. I asked Bachman if he could have envisioned what happened to him?

John Beaudin has been in major market radio (Edmonton, Vancouver & Calgary) for 35 years and a music journalist since 1989. He graduated from Broadcasting school as a newsman so he would have the skills to write about the artists that inspired him since he bought his first album, “Madman Across The Water” by Elton John as a teen. In the ’80s Beaudin was the host of the syndicated radio show “The Cross Canada Report” which had two versions (Rock and A/C). Beaudin was also asked to be a judge at the Juno Awards (Canada’s answer to the Grammys) Twice. He has anchored every position in radio including morning and afternoon drive and was a Program and Music Director for The Breeze and California 103 in Calgary. He currently hosts the popular Lovesongs at QM-FM in Vancouver and on iHeartRadio.
