Elton’s Guitarist Davey Johnstone Talks Elton’s 1975 classic album “Rock Of the Westies”

March 14, 2022 – Elton John was the biggest artist in the world in 1975. It was his highpoint and in the middle of the seventies the 60 Million Dollar man, as he was sometimes called, did what he did in previous years – he released two albums. The first the critically acclaimed autobiographical tale of his first meeting and writing with his “weatherman of words” Bernie Taupin. The record was “Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy.” It contained the top 10 hit “Someone Saved My Life Tonight.”

In the latter part of the year Elton fired long time drummer Nigel Olsson and bass player Dee Murray. He wanted a tougher sound so in came his old drummer friend Roger Pope, bassist Kenny Passarelli (Joe Walsh), keyboardist James Newton Howard and second guitarist and early Elton Collaborator Caleb Quaye. The result was refreshing for Elton fans who always knew he could bring up the rock in his sound but it also alienated some fans. The album, like it’s predecessor, did go to number on in the U.S. It also produced the number i hit “Island Girl” and “Grow Some Funk of Your Own” which peaked at #14.
